OBJECTIVE I: ADVOCACY: To expand the reach and effectiveness of NJ SOPHE's
advocacy efforts.
1.1 Develop sustained communication channels for advocacy information
exchange among NJ SOPHE leadership and members. (Advocacy Committee) 12/02 then on-going1.2 Develop/update, disseminate, and implement at least one NJ SOPHE
resolution on priority health education and public health issues per year. Note: this could be the same as the SOPHE issue. (Advocacy Committee) 6/031.3 Support SOPHE resolutions at the state level (Chapter Delegate,
Advocacy Committee and Executive Board) 6/031.4 Encourage and support a state advocacy effort each year (e.g. training, letter writing campaign, educating legislators) (Advocacy Committee) 6/03
1.5 Develop new collaborative relationships/partnerships with a minimum of two (2) other organizations for the purpose of influencing health issues and policies at the state level. (President, Advocacy Committee, et. Al) 12/03
1.6 Investigate partnering with non-traditional health partners to enhance the breadth and scope of NJ SOPHE's advocacy efforts. (Executive Board, Committee Chairs, Advocacy Committee, Liaisons) 6/03
1.7 Expand the relationships with the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services and the NJ Department of Education (Executive Board, Committee Chairs as appropriate) Ongoing
OBJECTIVE II: EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS: To maintain NJ SOPHE as a preeminent, professional health education organization with the State of New Jersey.
2.1 Appoint an External Communications Committee as a Standing Board committee. (Executive Board) 6/03
2.2 Develop a marketing plan for the profession of health education,
within New Jersey, that specifies partners, priority audiences, messages, methods, communication channels and time frames. (Vice-President, External Communications Committee) 6/04
2.3 Diffuse marketing plan to members. (External Communications Committee) 12/04
2.4 Pilot test, implement, and evaluate at least two (2) key initiatives as identified in the marketing plan. (External Communications Committee) 6/05
2.5 Evaluate marketing initiative with specific consideration for future implications for marketing NJ SOPHE. (External Communications Committee) 6/05
2.6 Develop and market a speakers bureau to provide health educators to speak on selected health issues. (President, Chapter Delegate, Executive Board) 12/02
OBJECTIVE III: PROGRAMS: To provide continuing professional development in an effort to retain existing members and attract new members, thereby advancing overall public health education within New Jersey.
3.1 Develop programs with colleges and universities in order to access health education professionals who publish regularly and provide a scholarly approach to health education and include students in the program development. (Program Committee) 6/03
3.2 Monitor attendance at programs and implement follow-up procedures for members who have become marginally active or inactive. (Program Committee and Membership Committee) 12/03
3.3 Link with at least two (2) programs, and/or community-based organizations per year that represent and address priority populations to foster the exchange of best practices, and develop linkages to participate in such efforts (e.g., cancer, heart, arthritis). High priorities would be to address health disparities and minority populations. (Program Committee and Continuing Education Committee) 6/04
3.4 Promote Health Education Week via proclamations, media and special programs with high visibility (Corresponding Secretary in collaboration with Technology Committee and External Communications Committee) 10/02
3.5 Provide or co-sponsor a variety of programs that meet the needs of NJ SOPHE members in a variety of employment settings. (Program Committee and Continuing Education Committee) 6/02
OBJECTIVE IV: MANAGEMENT OF NJ SOPHE: Continue to elevate the administration of NJ SOPHE's management functions to ensure the long-term viability of the organization.
4.1 Develop a focused membership development plan. Components of the plan would include, but not be limited to: a. Increase overall membership by 5-10% annually. (Membership Committee, Students/New Professions and Job Bank) 12/03
b. Increase the diversity of NJ SOPHE membership and leadership. (All members and Membership Committee) 6/02 to 6/05
c. Focus effort to outreach to university/college students (Membership Committee, Students/New Professionals) 6/03
d. Develop a grid/spreadsheet of places of employment of current NJ SOPHE members. Compare to all possible employers. Develop a mechanism to outreach to possible members within the variety of employment opportunities. (Membership Committee, Students/New Professionals, Job Bank) e. Develop a mentoring program for students, new professionals, new NJ SOPHE members. (Membership Committee, Students/New Professionals) 6/03
4.2 Continue to investigate finances and resources to support NJ SOPHE operations and implementation of the strategic plan. (Vice President, Executive Committee and Committee Chairs) On-going
4.3 Actively seek and write grants that utilize health educators as trainers. (Vice-President, Executive Board, Committee Chairs) Ongoing
